School Night and the Blue Dress

A School Visit that Changed my Profession

Welcome to Storytime with Coach Hugo. Today I want to share the story of going to my son's school at some point. At that time, I was working at a bank in an operations team, running marketing campaigns. And that's probably what I explained to him. So I went to "Back to School" night when he was just entering pre-first and the teacher made her presentation. After that, we started seeing everything that was in the room that the kids had already worked on for the first few months of school.

Then I noticed a beautiful blue dress done by my son using Play-Doh. So I go to it and the explanation is "My dad designs dresses". So the teacher comes, and she says, "Oh, I'm so excited to meet you because you probably are a fashion designer, your son just shared that you design dresses. So that's what he created."

I'm like, "I don't know where this came from. I work in a bank in an operations team, doing marketing campaigns."

A big learning for me was on communication and how to explain things in a simple way. So many times we say, "Hey, this is what's going on, this is where I'm going, these are the facts, these are the benefits of a product or the characteristics." And that's how we explain things and maybe the audience on the other side is not getting the message.

With my coaching clients, we always say, "communication is the response you get." So think about some of the messages you're sending out to your team, to your clients, to your partners that are not really simple enough. You could try to simplify them, make them easy to understand so that then you don't have this kind of misunderstanding.

So thanks again for watching Storytime and I'll see you in the next one!
