Don't fall in love with your product, fall in love with the sale!
In this episode of Business Spotlight, we connected recently with Peter Hawkins, the Managing Director of MELLOHAWK Logistics, an international freight forwarder based in Toronto specializing in truck, air and ocean cargo. In addition, he has acted as mentor to many entrepreneurs and has an active role in the Canadian business community.
In this episode, Peter shared these golden nuggets:
• Processes, systems, accounting... you really need to have those fundamental in place. The earlier you get them, the better off you are.
• Transferable skills, whether you're a waiter, serving food and describing what's in the kitchen, or you're trying to sell your service, or you're trying to let people know that you can be counted on to do what you say you're going to do, you have to be able to tell that story with confidence.
• Don't fall in love with your product, fall in love with the sale.
• Talk to everybody about your business.
• You don't have to invent something magical, look at what somebody else is doing and see if you can do it better, more efficiently. Go to them and offer to do it and if they reject it, then you do it on your own.
• Divide your business stuff and your personal stuff.
• Make sure that you are talking to all the resources that are available to you as a business owner, including all the government resources.
• It's the doer, the person who gets it done, the person who is going to win.
